The Romans were an ancient civilisation that began in a small town called ‘Rome’, which is now in Italy. They became an empire around 27 BCE and grew to include many countries across Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. They were famous for their impressive achievements in many areas, such as architecture, engineering, and government. The Romans built roads, bridges, and many other structures to transport goods and water, as well as beautiful buildings like the Colosseum and the Pantheon. Because they controlled a vast territory, the Romans maintained a strong army and appointed governors to different regions. The organisation of Roman society into separate classes played a crucial role in the control of all these areas and the distribution of wealth and power.
